Spider-man: Homecoming
This movie should be called Spiderman-UNDER-ROOS: The quest to right the Sony ship.
Since 2002 there have been 3 live action Spiderman actors, 6 movies, and 1 appearance in a cross over film. That’s a lot of Spiderman, but could Marvel films/Disney help Sony fix their most profitable franchise? Short answer is yes!
Spider-man: Homecoming features the youngest Peter Parker we have ever had in a live action film, as he struggles through his sophomore year in high school. Peter has been Spider-man for a while now, and has even fought alongside of the Avengers in Civil War. This film takes place right after that big fight, with Peter anxiously waiting for his next mission from Iron Man himself, Tony Stark. The call never comes and as Spider-man becomes restless with fighting street level crime after school, he seeks out a mysterious villain named The Vulture who is selling alien weapons to street level thugs.
Everyone by the point knows Spider-man. We have all seen his origin, cried during the famous Uncle Ben death scene, and we all know that “With great power, comes great responsibility”. This movie avoids these troupes and gives us a refreshing take on a character that has covered over and over again in the last 15 years. In fact, Marvel studios seems to be going out of their way to avoid all the classic clichés. It made the film fun and made everything we were seeing feel new and different.
Spiderman: Homecoming tried to balance the life of a high school student and being a super hero. The contrast between trying to find a date to the dance and fighting a super villain after school, and trying to be a good friend while living a double life. Where Bruce Wayne is Batman first and Bruce in his free time, you feel like Peter is constantly struggling to find a balance between a Super Hero and a normal kid. That makes this character enduring just like Stan Lee and Jack Kirby wrote him so long ago.
This film is not a perfect movie, but it’s flaws are few and far between. Spiderman: Homecoming took a unique look at what Spiderman would look like today, and delivered something that was very entertaining and engaging to watch.
