Jurassic world is the spiritual successor to the first Jurassic Park and brings with it all the fun and wonder that you felt with the original. It is not as good as Jurassic Park (not much is) but it does ret-con almost all of the horrible sequels that came before it so that should count for something!
This movie starts with Jurassic World up and running as a fully functional theme park, just like John Hammon intended. People flock by the millions to see every new attraction. As a movie fan it is truly satisfying to see the dream set up in Jurassic Park realized on screen. Even though the park has been successful (and safe) for 30 years today’s generation has gotten bored of the attractions and constantly ask the park for more and more. Trying to keep attendance up and satisfy the current generation of ADD consumers, Jurassic World decides to create a hybrid dinosaur! This of course goes horribly wrong and gives us a monster movie as the Indominus Rex picks off park goers one by one.
Jurassic World to me can be summed up in one word, fun! This is one of the best popcorn movies that I have seen in a long time. It is refreshing to see a film that is not held by an expanded universe or a promise of a sequel (although it’s coming). Sure, it takes some liberties and some of the characters are one-dimensional but we are not here to see actors we want to see Raptors! This delivers all of the promises from the first film and will keep a smile on your face from opening score to credits.
So leave your 3-act structure and character arch at the door and grab a bucket of popcorn to enjoy.
