X Men: Age of Apocalypse

The timeline has been reset and now we get to see young Gene Grey, young Cyclops, young Storm, and Old Wolverine? This movie is rad.

X-Men Age of Apocalypse is set in the 80’s (an amazing era to set a super hero movie) and the timeline has been reset after Days of Future Past. We find Charles Xavier’s school for the Gifted up and running with full classrooms of students. Everything is well until an ancient evil awakens after millennia to destroy the world, letting only the strongest among them survive to serve Apocalypse.

This movie does a lot right. Fans of the X-Men will be happy to see fan favorites like Cyclopes, Night crawler, Gene grey and many more rejoin the franchise. X-Men movies are always about showcasing the various mutants’ powers and the fight scenes in this film deliver in keeping the action interesting. This movie also benefits from having two stellar movies preceding it so you are connected to the main cast from the start.

Among all this good there were some weak points, and like they pulled it from the Marvel handbook this film had a weak villain. He was powerful but the problem for me was his powers were not well defined. He also delegated a lot of the fighting to his four horsemen instead of just blinking the X-Men out of existence like he did at the beginning of the movie. Apocalypse’s set up was really interesting but I thought ultimately both his story ark and his final fight were a little underwhelming.

I’ve always been a fan of these movies (with the exception of X3 and Wolverine) and again I really enjoyed this one. Brian Singer kept it fresh with new characters and new developments for the classic stand bys. This franchise continues to be the shining star at Fox and for that I’m giving it:
