Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising

Review by Danny Sulivan

Of all of the movie genres, comedy sequels are often the hardest to get right. Most fail to capture the laugh-out-loud hilarity of their predecessor staying stuck in the past with what worked before. Thankfully, Neighbors 2 steps into the limelight among the great comedy sequels and keeps it fresh with 50% more Zac Efron abs.

Starring Zac Efron, Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, and Chloe Grace-Moretz, Neighbors 2 brings us a couple years after the crazy antics of the original Neighbors, where Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne’s characters, Mac and Kelly, have finally sold their house to a buyer. They want to move away from the nearby college in order to raise their daughter and soon-to-be-born second child. However, the house is subjected to a 30-day escrow where the buyer can back out if they find anything unpleasant about the property they’re about to buy. A new sorority called Kappa Nu moves in and the fight reignites between college girls and the Neighbors who so desperately want to move.

This movie is really hysterical. Even though it brings back some of the gags from the first film, it gives them a new spin. Seth Rogen is as funny as ever, but while he’s reliable for a few good laughs in the movie, the standout for me was Zac Efron. He really shines as a comedic actor in this movie, and most of the best moments in the movie had him involved.

Admittedly this is not as good as the original Neighbors because Zac Efron and his fraternity make better foils then Kappa Nu and some of the jokes seem to be recycled. This is still a respectable sequel with lots of laugh out loud moments that is definitely worth seeing if you were a fan of #1!
