San Andreas or as I like to call it, one million ways to die in an earthquake, is the latest movie to join the ever-growing disaster movie trend. But by no means is this movie a disaster.
San Andreas stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Ray a rescue helicopter pilot for the LAFD. He is working one afternoon when an earthquake hits the west coast and sets off a chain of events that have disastrous results. Seeing all of the teasers and trailers for this movie I was expecting a total stinker, but boy was I wrong! This movie really took me by surprise and I found myself being way more entertained than I thought I would!
Right from the beginning of the movie hits you with action and keeps up that pace for a majority of the film. A tricky thing for any action movie is balancing the emotion of the movie and the action, San Andreas delivers on both points. It also was able to bring together these emotional moments that really sucked you into the plot. This wasn’t the best acting I have ever seen but it was solid and fit what is expected with the disaster movie genre. This film falls into the same pitfalls that you would guess for a world crushing destruction movie. It becomes predictable and the CGI effects were uneven throughout the film, sometimes it seemed seamless and other times it was obviously fake which took me out of the film.
With all of that said, these factors combined to make an enjoyable summer movie that puts it leaps ahead of disaster movies in recent history.
