If Lebron James wasn’t one of the best basketball players ever I would tell him to quit his day job because he stole the show. This movie is crude; laugh out loud funny, and a smart satirical look into dating in today’s world.
The best part of this movie is that the typical romantic comedy getting flipped on its head. Amy Schumer plays a woman scared of intimacy who likes to party and sleep around which plays perfectly off of Bill Hader who loves to gossip with his BFF Lebron James and is in tune with his feelings. Trainwreck hits all of the usual beats from this type of movie but because of this unique role reversal something about it feels fresh. Although the plot is predictable at points it still is very entertaining to watch a rom-com from a different angle.
If you like Schumer’s comedy then this movie is right up your ally. It is rude, inappropriate, and dirty but I loved it. This comedy has a distinct voice, sure some people will be turned away from the over sexualized and often profane style but in this generation, Schumer’s voice is heard. The cast is full of comedians and they all play their parts perfectly. The chemistry between Schumer and Hader also works really well even in the emotional and serious scenes. The only negative I had was that it seemed a bit long. The film had several points to wrap up sooner, but decided to add more layers that ultimately were unnecessary. My other nitpick on Trainwreck is that some of the emotional scenes didn’t have room to breathe over jokes and bits. This movie has some real heart and I would have loved to see more of it.
Overall this was a great comedy that not only changed up traditional roles but also had a clear voice that will resonate with a younger audience. My mom would hate it but I loved this movie!
My Ranking: See it in theaters!
