Ant-Man answers the question, “where does the MCU go from here? How can the stakes get any bigger?” Ant-Man smartly responds by taking the whole story smaller.
Ant-Man is about Scott Lang, an expert thief with a good heart that steals from the rich who have wronged the public. His skills are required by the original Ant-Man, Hank Pym (played by Michael Douglas), to prevent his former protégé from discovering the secrets to shrinking down to size and selling that technology to the highest bidder. Scott then becomes the Ant-Man and sets off to plan his heist using his new powers.
I’m not going to lie, I was very nervous for this movie because the premise of a hero that can shrink down to the size of an Ant doesn’t sound that interesting but Marvel once again has nailed the bizarre. This movie doesn’t try to hit the same stakes as the other MCU movies and keeps it neatly between the lines for what an Ant-Man movie should be. The ants are used really well and the action is cleaver as Ant-Man is constantly shrinking and growing to perfectly fit the situation. The best part about Ant-Man is the humor, it absolutely delivers and the jokes are perfectly sprinkled throughout the action to constantly keep a smile on your face.
The only problem that I had is a repeatable offense for the MCU, and that is the weak villain. This villain falls into the same pothole that has plagued the MCU since the beginning, He is not fleshed out and from the first time you see him on screen you know he is supposed to be the bad guy. The worst part about this was that his motivation could have been so interesting but it was never fully explored.
Overall this movie looked amazing, had cool action, hilarious jokes, and a lot of heart. This is a must see movie and ill see it multiple times before adding it to my collection.
