Southpaw is the best boxing movie since Rocky. This movie did something that all sports film neglect to do, make you actually cheer for the protagonist. There were multiple people cheering in the theater with every punch Billy hope (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) threw.
This film focuses on the career of the boxer and light heavy weight champion Billy Hope. At 43-0 he is at the top of the world but what is the climb without the fall. And Billy falls hard and loses literally everything in his life. The main part of the story is his redemption and his rise to become the champion once again. This is a very heavy movie filled with emotion that drives this pretty predictable plot and elevated it to another level. I really enjoyed the boxing choreography; it was beautiful and made you feel every punch that was thrown. The acting was also wonderful in this film specifically Gyllenhaal who again disappeared into this role, I would not be surprised if there is some Oscar buzz for this performances.
I want to go on record saying that this movie is heavy but the emotion drove the plot forward with excellent pacing. I think that this is one of the best sports movies to ever be released and my official Buff Bros ranking is
SEE IT IN THEATERS.
