What happens when you put all your eggs in one basket? Some of the eggs get cracked and it leaves a mess.
Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice is pretty self-explanatory. This movie focuses on the after affects of the destruction in Metropolis. This post-destruction world makes Superman a very controversial character. Some people love him for saving the world, some people are angry with him for destroying the city, and some are afraid of what he could do if he ever turned on mankind. Batman falls into the latter category so he sets out to stop the Man of Steel for good.
My problem with this film was that it was basically three movies jammed together to make one sequel generator. There was a good Batman movie, where Bruce Wayne struggles with the fact that Superman is an unchecked power in the universe and has to put him down. In Superman’s movie, the people of the world don’t fully understand him and although he feels human he gets treated as a hostel alien. Finally we have a Justice League movie that tries to tie this film into a future franchise. There are times when each of these moving parts are cool and deliver on the promise for what this movie should be but when they cross paths it just gets sloppy.
A huge positive for the film was Ben Affleck as Batman. This version of the Dark Knight was the most brutal batman ever put to film. The action was amazing and the character felt close to the Batman I knew from the comics. The fight between Batman and Superman is epic and although it ends awkwardly this felt like a good culmination of the tension between these two heroes. I also loved Gal Gadot as Wonder Women. She is not in the film for very long but when she is, she fills the role well.
Overall I really wanted to love this movie and I came away liking parts of it. This movie has its high points for sure and I am looking forward to the Justice League and the other solo films DC has scheduled; I just felt that there was too much going on and the main focus was lost. Batman was cool, Wonder Women kicked ass, and Superman was still around…. I give this film 3 out of 5 Justice League Sequels.
