Creepy…. Just terribly creepy. Jake Gyllenhaal transforms into a different person as he takes on the role of Lou Bloom the camera for hire in this dark, suspenseful thriller.
Lou is an up and coming video reporter that uses a police scanner to chase crimes and videotape the grotesque and unsettling. The better the footage the more news outlets will pay him for the story. As Lou starts to have success he starts to amp up his tactics and find that the more risks he takes the better his footage seems to become.
Gyllenhaal’s character has strong similarities to Christian Bale’s in American Psycho. As we see the character start to show more and more of himself you see the classic double life, charming to those he needs to impress while being calculated and demanding to his partners. This makes to a very intense and very creepy character piece.
This movie delivers good suspenseful moments as you travel around LA with Bloom from crime scene to crime scene. You start to get disgusted that you are a witness to such horrible actions and such a cold and unshakable character trying to build an empire off people’s death. But that is where the movie is so good to me because it makes you feel something!
