Theory of Everything

A movie that moves and performances that feel like you are watching the real thing instead of a film are just part of why The Theory of Everything is so great.

This bio-pic is a look at the amazing life of Stephen Hawking, played by Eddie Redmayne. It starts as Hawking is studying to get his PHD and discovering the field of interest that would later define his career. It then details Hawking’s life as he discovers and struggles with his disease while at the same time unlocking some of the most important theories in physics.

Eddie Redmayne gets totally lost in this role. His performance is heart breaking as well as inspiring. He pulls you into this amazing story about Hawking’s life and pulls you into the film as you feel for his journey. As the disease continues to devestate Hawking’s body Redmayne’s performance gets harder but also more impressive.

It would have been easy for filmmakers to do a much duller version of this story as we see Steven rise from a student to a physics icon but they always keep the focus on themes like love, family, and sacrifice. Science is a part of his life but it orbits around the undivided love from his wife (played expertly by Felicity Jones). This makes the story utterly human and painfully relatable as you go through the pain with Hawking and you feel his joy and sadness till the credits role.

This was undoubtedly not only one of my favorite movies this year but also one of the best. I think this movie could win best picture and I believe it deserves it.

My Score: Instant Classic
