Venom Movie
Sony, creator of the emoji movie and killer of two previous Spider-Man franchises takes Spider-Man’s greatest villain and….creates an admittedly dumb, but enjoyable movie.
Listen was anyone hoping for a home run out of this? It is a villain centric movie where he cannot even fight against the hero that made him famous. What makes this even odder is that Venom is basically just dark Spider-Man. Same powers, same suit, same shit! I was expecting a garbage fire and instead got a movie I would actually like to see a sequel to.
Eddie Brock is a famous TV reporter who when investigating a crooked company, the Life Foundation, discovers that the illegal experiments he has been looking into is with alien life forms. These aliens, or Symbiotes, need a human host to survive and Eddie quickly ends up bonding with one of them who has named himself Venom. This Symbiote give Eddie extra powers, a cool black suite, and voices in his head.
The plot is a little void without Spider-Man to kick it all into gear so the film has to do a lot of heavy lifting at the beginning of the movie. In fact it spends almost its first hour before Eddie and Venom finally bond. Even after they bond though the plot becomes dumb and doesn’t seem to follow its own rules. The visuals and action are what make this movie fun, that is why I was so disappointed with it’s PG-13 ranking, an R rating would have let this film stand apart and taken advantage of the best parts of Venom as a character.
Even with these issues the film was a good time, and I truly am interested in seeing a Venom 2. If you are willing to go watch a fun action movie and not think too hard about character motivation or plot you too can enjoy Venom.
